Something New On Merri Musings

Not really.

Never Forget Them

I made this by special request for my Jawa co-blogger Vicki.

Tragic Omaha Shooting

You can go to pretty much any news website and find the story…..Nine dead and five injured in Omaha mall shooting. I don’t need to link anything.

The mall isn’t too far from our neighborhood. I heard a couple of stories from people who either missed the shooting by a few minutes (one had been in the store minutes before the shootings) or who had worked at the store and knew employees there. Omaha’s not an especially huge community, so there truly seems to be connections to everyone.

Trying to get in touch with loved ones was hard - the phone circuits were overloaded, so getting through was a miracle at best. Silly things like traffic jams truly called out that something was different as I was driving home from work, a trip that takes me right by the mall.

The shooter - a 19-year-old “troubled kid” - wanted to “go out in style” according to one of his “suicide notes.” I refuse to bring any kind of notoriety to his name, so you won’t see it listed here because that’s exactly what he wanted - he alerted another person in a communication “I’m going to be a star.” FUCK HIM. How dare he take the lives of innocent people to live out some twisted fantasy of his! If he wants to pull the trigger on himself, so be it…the world is likely a bit safer without this maniac in it. But based on the frantic family members trying to learn about their loved ones, this jerk affected many, many people in a very profound and sad way. My heart goes out to those family members and friends who lost someone in this senseless act of violence. Also for those who were traumatized by this act, and for those rescue workers and police officers who are undoubtedly impacted by this. I will be praying for all of you!

I’ll be honest. I’m tired of the bullshit excuses already coming in. He was troubled, he was depressed, he had a rough life. Think about it - how many people in life are troubled, depressed, and have experienced challenging issues? There are many…and they don’t shoot people in an effort to gain notoriety or “popularity.” This was someone extremely broken, sick and disgustingly selfish and self-serving. I understand he’s a son, he’s a friend, but he’s also a MURDERER. He CERTAINLY didn’t think of his friends or his family when he selfishly pulled the trigger, while looking into the terrified faces of those he decided to shoot. THAT will be the bullshit notoriety he’s leaving behind.

The Other Terrorists

Riley Ann Sawyers, age two. Murdered by her mother and stepfather.

In a statement to police included in the affidavit, Trenor, 19, said she and Zeigler, 24, killed Riley July 24.

The girl was beaten with leather belts, had her head held underwater in a bathtub and then was thrown across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor, Trenor said in the document. She said they kept the body in a storage shed for one to two months before they put it in a plastic bin and dumped it into Galveston Bay.

Why isn’t there a Gitmo for these types of people?

Stories like this are why leftist squeals about waterboarding fall on my deaf ears. Just watch, these two oxygen wasters will probably get light sentences for involuntary manslaughter. They surely won’t get the death penalties that they both richly deserve.

If their burned bodies were hanging from a Fallujah bridge, I would rightfully declare “Screw ‘em.”

Chester Arthur Stiles, Videotaped, alleged child rapist, but still a convicted douche. Coming soon to a Pound Me In The Ass Prison Near You

Chester Arthur Stiles, the man identified in a videotape “allegedly” raping a three year old girl, has been arrested by police.

LAS VEGAS - Police said late Monday they had arrested Chester “Chet” Arthur Stiles, the man accused of videotaping himself while raping a 3-year-old girl.

So much for his ex-girlfriend’s claim that he’d “never be taken alive by the police.”

And what a pity it is that he was taken alive by the police. On the other hand, if convicted and sent to prison, we have the gratification of knowing that he’ll be on the receiving end of the horrors he visited (allegedly, conveniently videotaped) on a three year old girl.

“…she had taken good care of the children…”

…so is that why she drown them both in the bathtub?

CLEVELAND — A 2-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister were apparently drowned in a bathtub Monday, and their mother was arrested, police said.

A man who said he is the girls’ father told investigators the woman called him at work and said their children “are at peace,” said Cleveland police Lt. Thomas Stacho.

Another tragic end to the lives of two beautiful children at the hands of a parent. I’m certain she’s going to pull out the “Andrea Yates” M.O. - I was depressed, the devil made me do it, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

Deondra Hurt, 19, who lives in the same two-story apartment building, said she heard the girls’ father screaming and shouting. She later went to the apartment and saw their mother “on a couch, and she was just sitting there. She was a nice girl. It’s real sad.”

Stacho said the girls apparently drowned, but autopsies were pending Tuesday to officially determine the causes of death. The county coroner was trying to confirm the victims’ correct names Monday.

Hurt said the woman had taken good care of the children.

“She always had her kids dressed up, with hair done every day,” Hurt said. “They were well-behaved kids. They played jump rope and would write on the ground with chalk.”

Yep, Andrea Yates took care of her kids, too. And now she’s living the rest of her life sharing fond memories about her children…yes, the children she methodically murdered by drowning them in the bathtub. She’s not in prison, but in an institution because she was found “not guilty” by reason of insanity. I’m guessing that will be the plea in this case as well. In the mean time, please say a prayer for the two little girls who no longer breathe, play, or dress up. They will never see their 5th birthday. They will never have a boyfriend, they won’t be cheerleaders, they won’t ever marry, go to school, or have children of their own. Thanks, Mom.

A Reason Why There Are Such Things as Jail

Just look at that image for a minute. First of all, the man beat this child. Then he tried convincing the mother of this child that he “fell off the couch.” How could *anyone* do anything like this to such a beautiful child….to ANY child? What could this child POSSIBLY have done?

La Vista police said the injuries were caused by Keith Parker, 28, the live-in boyfriend of Aiden’s mother. He was arrested Monday morning on felony child abuse charges. Parker made his first court appearance Thursday, where his bond was set at $250,000.

The baby will be fine, authorities say, this injury the result of multiple skull fractures. The mother of Aiden believed her boyfriend at first, because it didn’t look this bad, but the bruising kept developing and after 3 days took the baby to the hospital.

Yanno, Parker may be protected from the general population behind bars, but that doesn’t mean he’s protected from those behind bars with him. Parker would make a good whipping post…have at him! Let’s see how he likes it.

UPDATE: Here’s what an evil, vile, sick, disgusting child abuser looks like:

I thank God that Aiden is healing and will be okay…at least on the outside. I pray that he never sees such evil again in his life. As for Parker, I pray that justice will be served. That man should never see the outside of a 6′ hole again, but at the very least, he should never again see the outside of a prison cell.

The Most Obvious Headline Ever

The headline… Studies: Death Penalty Discourages Crime

::: slaps head ::: Whodathunkit?

An excerpt:

What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument — whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analysts say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer.

But the life of a criminal is more valuable than those three to 18 lives for our society, or so it seems by everyone’s desire to abolish the death penalty.

And the co-author of the study is against the death penalty!

“Science does really draw a conclusion. It did. There is no question about it,” said Naci Mocan, an economics professor at the University of Colorado at Denver. “The conclusion is there is a deterrent effect.”

A 2003 study he co-authored, and a 2006 study that re-examined the data, found that each execution results in five fewer homicides, and commuting a death sentence means five more homicides. “The results are robust, they don’t really go away,” he said. “I oppose the death penalty. But my results show that the death penalty (deters) — what am I going to do, hide them?

I encourage you to read the rest of this story, which follows by outlining conclusions and the various levels of argument for the flip side. The morality issues, the “flawed” methodology, etc.

It’s really common sense to me. Yes, serious and speedy consequences to a situation will deter future criminals to consider the same crime. When there are no serious or speedy consequences that make a criminal pause, they will continue down the path, willing to take the consequences. Am I cold blooded for wanting to protect innocent people from murderers? I personally don’t think so. I only wish society could see the consequences for their decision to let these criminals off with a slap versus a real sentence.

Sisayehiticha Dinssa: $78K, Nuke & Cyanide Info

…and the MSM is focused more on O.J. Simpson.

DETROIT A man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after officials say they found him carrying $78,883 in cash and a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials and cyanide.

Sisayehiticha Dinssa of Dallas will be held in custody at least until Monday, a U.S. magistrate ruled Wednesday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leonid Feller said Dinssa is a potential risk to the community and federal agents want to get a warrant to search his computer more thoroughly, The Detroit News reported.

I’m such a bad human being to be suspicious of Mr. Dinssa, huh! I don’t know…does this sound suspicious to you? I mean, other than the cash, the nuke and cyanide info stored on his laptop?

Dinssa arrived in Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam and was headed for Phoenix, Feller said.

Dinssa, an unemployed U.S. citizen, was arrested at the airport Tuesday. An affidavit filed in court said a dog found the scent of narcotics on cash Dinssa carried.

When agents asked him if he had any cash to declare, he said he had $18,000. But when agents checked his luggage, they found an additional $60,883. When they scrolled through his laptop, they found the mysterious files, authorities said.

I must be some kooky, freaky conservative to worry about such silly things. Yeah, that’s it.

Saddam Found Guilty for Crimes Against Humanity

My first assessment of this would be a resounding “DUH!”

The sentence is now in the hands of the tribunal, who has an unlimited amount of time for review, but once their review is complete, they have 30 days to complete the execution (by hanging).

We all know he’s guilty, so it’s all tap dancing and drama from here. It will be interesting to see how long this takes and what wrangling will occur.

Annie Jacobson: Flight 327 Revisited

With all of the recent events surrounding terrorist attacks, Linda reminds us of Annie Jacobson and Flight 327 - a flight in which terrified passengers witnessed what was perhaps a dry run or a “called off” terrorist act. An exerpt from Annie’s story over at Linda’s site summarizes the fear those on board must have felt:

After seeing 14 Middle Eastern men board separately (six together, eight individually) and then act as a group, watching their unusual glances, observing their bizarre bathroom activities, watching them congregate in small groups, knowing that the flight attendants and the pilots were seriously concerned, and now knowing that federal air marshals were on board, I was officially terrified.

Probably what was most alarming was the lack of response or concern of the Federal Marshals. As Linda describes:

It turns out the traveling “musicians” on their way to a gig had nothing with them to make music with. Two months prior, there was a credible warning issued about terrorists traveling under “P class visas (sports and culture), and that’s just what these men had, except, their visas were expired. Despite the fact that they were from Syria, which is a terrorist nation, no one looked close enough to discover that their visas were expired, and only two of the fourteen were questioned pre-flight, that breaks all of the rules. Despite the presence of Federal Marshals all over the airport when the plane landed, the men were allowed to leave without being searched or questioned. These men had been flying back and forth across the country several times using one-way tickets, for which they paid cash.

Annie was visited by the Feds in March ‘05 (the flight was on June 29, 2004 - a full 8 and a half months earlier) as part of an investigation of events and the apparent botching of the investigation of what happened on that flight.

Linda has great advice:

Read the whole thing now, and the next time you feel like complaining about airport security and carrying your lipstick, read it again.

My question to you. What would have happened had the same overall lackadaisical approch been used with the flights from England to the U.S.?

Yes, not carrying our precious iPods, lipsticks and water bottles aboard a flight can be a bit inconvenient. But picking up the pieces of blown up airplanes is significantly more alarming, not to mention the grieving family members who would be put in a position to pick up the pieces of their lives.
