Santas’ New Sleigh!

I thought of my dear friend Linda and the fun we had on this coaster this summer when I saw this picture:

Remember that drop, Linda? Santa would get his presents to all the good girls and boys in about 2 seconds, iffin he didn’t have a heart attack first, the jolly old elf!

October: What Day Is Today?

It’s that time again, ladies and gentlemen. With Columbus Day and Halloween already marked on your calendar, I thought I’d let you know of a few lesser-known days of celebration for October. But FIRST, be sure to celebrate October for the month that it is (National Celebrate Sun Dried Tomatoes Month, National Cookie Month and Workplace Politics Month!). Oh, and now those daily celebrations:

October 9: National Kick Butt Day (I’ll be traveling, so this may come in handy!)

October 11: National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work & School Day (awwwwwwww!)

October 12: International Moment of Frustration Scream Day (I’ll be traveling again, so I’m sure this will fit!)

October 13: International Skeptics Day (hmmm….I’m not so sure about that…)

October 15: Be Bald and Be Free Day (um….no. Ain’t going there)

October 25: Sourest Day (pucker up!)

October 26: Mule Day (also known as jackass day? hehehe)

October 27: Cranky Co-Workers Day (and just how would one “celebrate” this?)

October 30: Haunted Refrigerator Night (um…who thinks these things up anyway?)

October 31: National Knock-Knock Jokes Day (and to think Halloween kicked this one off the calendar!)

Enjoy! And just in case you need more reason to celebrate, next week is National Chestnut Week, so go wild!

Dual-Sex Fish in Potomac Raise Safety Questions for D.C. Area Water System

WASHINGTON Scientists say more dual-sex fish are swimming in the Potomac River — and the cause may be pollution.

The fish with both male and female characteristics have been discovered in the rivers and streams around the nation’s capital. And that’s spawning questions about the impact of contaminants on the millions who drink the tap water.

Pollution….who’da thunk?

The general manager of the water-filtering Washington Aqueduct says he doesn’t think anybody has the answer right now. But he says there’s no evidence that tap water from the Potomac is unsafe.

Isn’t that what the water-filtering is supposed to do?

Scientists say humans should be less susceptible to pollutants, anyway, because they have larger bodies and different hormone systems. And unlike fish, they aren’t constantly immersed in water.

What an absolutely profound statement! I mean, who knew; we’re BIGGER than (most) fish, have different hormones and we don’t live submerged in water! What the report doesn’t say is that 100% of the fish tested were found to have extreme liberal tendancies.

Party Gal

Now I have to admit that I do my fair share of partying…..but a THREE DAY RECOVERY? Take another aspirin, suck down some Pepto and get back to bloggin ya wuss!

Bookworm Addict…Among Other Things!

So….I have nothing to post tonight. I know it is mostly because I’m tired, but also because of this. Um, thanks dammit, Beth?

He’s Not Dead (Yet)!

Colector Muerto: Bring out yer dead.

Val (BabaluBlog): Here’s one!

Colector Muerto: That’ll be ocho pesos!

Castro: I’m not dead.

Colector Muerto: What?

Val (BabaluBlog): Nothing. There’s your pesos!

Castro: I’m not dead.

Colector Muerto: He says he’s not dead.

Val (BabaluBlog): Yes he is.

Castro: I’m not.

Colector Muerto: He isn’t.

Val (BabaluBlog): Well, he will be soon, he’s very ill.

Castro: I’m getting better!!

Val (BabaluBlog): No you’re not, you’ll be stone dead in a moment.

Colector Muerto: Well, I can’t take him like that. It’s against regulations.

Castro: I don’t want to go on the cart. I’m a DICTATOR for chrissakes!

Val (BabaluBlog): Oh, don’t be such a baby.

Colector Muerto: I can’t take him.

Castro: I feel fine.

Val (BabaluBlog): Oh, do me a favor.

Colector Muerto: I can’t.

Val (BabaluBlog): Well, can you hang around for a couple of minutes? He won’t be long.

Colector Muerto: I promised I’d be at the Miami celebration. They have mojitos there!

Val (BabaluBlog): Well, when is the celebration?

Colector Muerto: Thursday.

Castro: I think I’ll go for a walk. Maybe I’ll see Elian Gonzales. Love that kid!

Val (BabaluBlog): You’re not fooling anyone, you know. Isn’t there anything you could do?

Castro: I feel happy. I feel happy. I’m a dictator! I own Cuba!

[Colector Muerto looks up and down the street then hits Castro over the head with his club]

Val (BabaluBlog): Ah, thank you very much.

Colector Muerto: Not at all. See you on Thursday.

Val (BabaluBlog): Right.

Post-Independence Day Thoughts

Of course I know that the number one reason we celebrate Independence Day is to commemorate our freedom, those who fought for our freedom and those who continue to fight so we can have the gifts of freedom. I do think of those things on a daily basis, honestly. We usually celebrate the day with a cookout and fireworks, and this year was no different. We did the hamburger and brats thing, and I surprised the kiddies with this fun cake (which tasted awesome, by the way!):

Ain’t it cute? Look at the inside:

I love Jell-o and what it can do. :-)

We wrapped up the night with some fireworks. The neighborhood was illuminated with tons of fireworks, but we had a great show, too, including this big daddy finale, which was no less that 1 foot in diameter and close to 3 feet tall. Put it this way, I had a hard time carrying it outside!

Hubby said that watching the kids kinda brought him back to the past a bit, and I wouldn’t disagree. They had a great time and we’re ready for next year already! I won’t mention the 2 pitchers of mango fruity drinks I downed, either. Heh.

…He May be Crazy, but We’re Running a Close Second!

So, Hubby shared his daring adventures in Orlando, riding the Sky Coaster and the Sling Shot. Do I think he’s crazy? Damn right I do. Every time I thought about getting on one of those rides, I kept pondering whether my life insurance would cover it. Heh.

While I didn’t ride those rides, our 8-year-old was tricked into interested in riding G-Force, which is styled after drag racing. It propelled us to 110+ MPH in under 2 seconds. I have to say it scared me plenty (mostly going through my head was…”um, are the breaks working?!?!?!?!?” It was actually quite awesome, only paling in comparison to the pumped up look on my son’s face!

This isn’t us, but it could have been!

I’d recommend this ride to anyone who has a soooper seeeekrit wish to drag race!

I’m BAAAAAAAACK!

Well, we are back from Florida, and Florida is still standing. Barely. Oh, and I’m still standing. Barely. :-) What a great trip! I will definitely write more later, along with some great shots of the trip, but the need to wash 18 loads of laundry, pick up pets from all over town, replenish our very empty kitchen and pay bills kinda is taking up the vast majority of my time.

I first want to thank Beth, Tammy and Jody who helped out by cross-posting here at Merri Musings while I was out. I truly appreciate you helping me out in a pinch, ladies….you all ROCK! Any time you need my help, well, you know where to find me!

I also want to gush about the opportunity we had to meet some very special people down in Florida. Last Thursday, we took a trip to Tampa and met up with Linda and Wild Thing (and her dear hubby). We had a great time tooling around Busch Gardens (LOVE THOSE COASTERS!) and were treated like royalty at the lovely home of one of Linda’s friends, Steve. Click on their links above to get some great posts about our time together…what a great time! I am honored to have met all of them! We also had the great honor of driving up to Tallahassee and meeting Beth and her beautiful daughter on hubby’s birthday. I never knew another person had as much energy, if not more energy than my own daughter - but that would be Beth’s little princess! :-) We had a chance to talk, drink a little, and take in some dinner. Truly, it was hard to leave, but we did try to get Beth to drive to Orlando and hang out the next day. She’s thinking that it may have been a good idea, given her adventures on the road (click on the link to read about all her fun!). I’m sure there will be another time for us to meet, though, Beth!

What a great vacation. I almost cried boarding the plane yesterday. We were trying to figure out a way to sneak in another day to see the beach, but those damned obligations plus a need to quit spending money seemed to get in the way. More on some of the fun we had, but now, I guess it’s back to real life!
